Don’t be a Stiff: Importance of Stretching
Many people forget to warm up or even think about stretching before or after workouts. Stretching should be one of the key parts of everyone’s workout. Now why is it that everyone does not stretch or bother in even doing so? It is either people forget, do not like to stretch because “it hurts” to stretch.
“Everyone should stretch, it should actually be one of the first thing’s people do when they wake up in the morning, especially after just sleeping and being still for long period of time,” said a Mayo Clinic representative. “Stretching helps you warm up your muscle and keep yourself from being prone to injuries.”
Stretching is important to one’s overall health. Stretching improves circulation, reliefs muscle tension, enhances muscle coordination, increases range of motion, and even increases energy levels.
One workout that focuses only on stretching is Yoga. Yoga increases your flexibility, tones your body, reliefs stress, gives you energy, and can even help with sleeping problems. “Yoga is considered a mind-body type of complementary and alternative medicine practice. Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind,” said a Mayo Clinic Representative.
So if you feel sore or stiff after every workout, start stretching. For more helpful tips on stretching visit the Mayo Clinic’s website, and if interested about yoga visit your local area’s park district to find out about classes and times.
